When you are shopping for used guns, there are several legal ways to purchase. Here are 6 places to shop for a previously owned firearm:
1. From someone you know: Probably the easiest way to buy a used gun is from someone you know well. These kinds of private sale purchases are not highly regulated as long as you live in the same state as the person selling the gun. They do not require a background check and the seller does not have to be a Federal Firearm Licensee (FFL). However, the person selling you the gun must be reasonably certain you do not fall into a category that would make you unable to pass a background check. These sales are subject to any applicable state laws.

2. Online: The online gun auction site gunbroker.com is an example of an online sale site. The site provides many new and used guns. It uses Federal Firearm Licensees and requires that people buying on the site who do not have an FFL use a local gun broker with the appropriate license to complete the sale. It is important to note that online sales are subject to the same regulations as brick-and-mortar stores
3. Gun shops: Local gun shops often purchase and sell used guns. These shops are an advantage for the novice buyer. Often the shops will guarantee the product or provide some kind of refund opportunity. Another advantage of the local gun shops is the opportunity to physically inspect the gun before you purchase. You can often get a warranty.
4. Pawn shops: Pawn brokers often acquire used guns that are later put up for sale in their shops. Pawn brokers are required to follow all of the appropriate licensure regulations and background checks on buyers. A disadvantage of buying at a pawn shop is the inability to know the history of the gun.
5. Gun shows: A good portion of the sales at gun shows are used guns. Individuals and hobbyists sell their firearms at these kinds of events.
