Wisconsin Gun Laws and How They Differ From Neighboring States

Wisconsin’s gun laws are lenient when compared to its neighboring states.

To purchase, own, and carry firearms in Wisconsin, residents don’t need a permit or license for handguns, rifles, or shotguns, according to the NRA-ILA. There is, however, a 48-hour waiting period for a permit to purchase a handgun.

Wisconsin is also an open carry state, which means citizens may lawfully carry a firearm in public. They may also openly carry a weapon in a vehicle if they have a concealed handgun permit.

Illinois, to the south, is considered a “non permissive” open carry state. In Minnesota and Iowa, to the west, it is required for residents to have a license to open carry. And Missouri, to the southwest, is considered an "open carry friendly state," according to OpenCarry.org.

By law, Wisconsin is a “shall-issue” state for a concealed carrying license (concealing a weapon on one’s person in public). Since Nov. 1, 2011, residents must apply for a concealed carry license through the Wisconsin Department of Justice. Wisconsin is the 49th state to make the concealed carrying of firearms a provision for normal citizens.

The issue of concealed verses open carry continues to stir up debate.

“Concealed carry — you don’t know who’s doing it and it doesn’t cause as much concern as open carry … One is a danger you know, and one is a danger you don’t know,” said Laura Cutilletta, senior staff attorney at the Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence, The Wall Street Journal reported.

In the WSJ article, Chris W. Cox, executive director of the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action, said, ”The National Rifle Association strongly supports conceal carry and open carry, and we will continue to lead the charge to protect and expand the right to self defense for law abiding Americans throughout the country.”
