The Zone Diet and Heart Health: 8 Things You Should Know

By    |   Thursday, 28 July 2016 02:38 PM EDT

The Zone diet was developed in part as a healthy way to prevent heart disease, diabetes, and other health problems while losing weight. Dr. Barry Sears developed the diet, which was made popular through the best-selling book "The Zone."

Here are some things to know about the Zone diet and heart health.

ALERT: 5 Signs Your Heart Is In Trouble

1. The Zone diet consists of eating protein and fat at every meal while limiting milk and other dairy products, fruit juices, and grains like rice and pasta.

2. The diet calls for participants to get 30 percent of calories from protein, 30 percent from fat, and 40 percent from carbohydrates like beans, fruits, whole grains, and some vegetables, according to Everyday Health.

3. Another aspect of the Zone diet is that it recommends eating five to six small meals per day.

4. Although it is higher in fat than many diets, healthy fats are encouraged, while saturated and trans fats are discouraged.

5. The total calorie count recommended for the Zone diet is rather low — only 1200 for women and 1500 for men, according to U.S. News & World Report, which ranked the Zone diet the 24th best heart healthy diet and 15th overall.

6. Although the Zone diet offers more variety than other kinds of diet plans, it did not prove to be much more effective, according to a 2007 study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association that was cited by U.S. News & World Report. After a year, participants had lost only about 7 pounds.

7. Another study showed that Zone dieters had the greatest reduction in inflammation of all the dieters studied, which could be beneficial to heart health.

8. Any diet that helps with weight loss will indirectly benefit heart health, since a healthy weight lowers the risks of heart disease and heart attacks, according to the American Heart Association.
