There are many perks that come with graceful aging. Among them are membership organizations that can open up a new world of benefits, government programs to access retirement income and healthcare, and a plethora of senior discounts that become available in many categories across the country.

Taking advantage of these opportunities starting at age 50+ is a smart and fun move for seniors and their families looking to stretch their dollars, stay safe and healthy, or just enjoy the perks of fine dining and travel.

Let’s start with the largest membership organizations that can provide not only discounts, but very valuable supports and services:

  • American Association of Retired Persons (AARP): Founded in 1958, AARP today has 38 million members. Eligible age to join is 50 years and older. Cost to join $12 first year (25% discount). Numerous benefits and rewards programs for members include: insurance, health and wellness, pharmacy, Medicare programs, travel, entertainment and dining, publications, education and advocacy.
  • American Automobile Association (AAA): Founded in 1902, AAA today has 58 million members. Membership levels of Classic ($51), Plus ($79), and Premier ($106) providing a wide range of benefits that include: all vehicle roadside assistance, towing, and other safety/emergency services, insurance, credit cards, identity theft monitoring, dining, entertainment, and travel services and discounts.

Also, make sure you understand the government benefits that come to you from Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and the Veterans Administration:

  • Social Security: Established in 1935 to provide a federal safety net for elderly (65+), unemployed and disadvantaged Americans. Social Security is funded by payroll tax, and pays out four categories of benefits: retirement, disability, dependents, and survivorship. As of 2019, the maximum monthly retirement benefit a person can receive is $2,861.
  • Medicare: Created in 1965 to give people age 65 and older access to healthcare supports and services. Medicare provides a number of benefits including: hospital care, skilled nursing facility (LTC), hospice, lab tests, surgery, home health care, doctor care and outpatient services, prescriptions, and preventative services. Enrollment is required on an annual basis, and Medicare health plan options such as Medicare Advantage or Medical Savings Accounts are available to recipients.
  • Medicaid: Created in 1965 as a joint federal-state program to give low-income persons and the disabled (and dependents) access to healthcare, and long-term care supports and services. Medicaid provides a variety of benefits to qualified applicants such as: doctor visits, hospital expenses, nursing home care, home health care, and long-term care costs, both in a nursing home and at-home care.
  • Veterans Administration (VA): The VA was formally established in 1921. There are many forms of benefits for active duty and retired members of the U.S. Military including: pensions, G.I. Bill and education, insurance, home loans, small business programs, disability, and Aid & Attendance for long-term care.

Companies of all types offer discounts specifically for seniors at various ages. Since 2013, I have been updating and publishing this list of senior discounts that continues to benefit seniors every year.

Knowing which restaurants, supermarkets, department stores, hotels, theme parks, movie theaters and many others are giving senior discounts around the country is your ticket to savings and good living!

Remember always ASK for your discounts before you purchase!
