7 Places With the Oldest Population

By    |   Friday, 04 September 2015 11:21 AM EDT

Some areas maintain an older population because lifelong residents choose to remain. Other cities grow significantly from seniors moving to attractive retirement places that offer cost-of-living advantages or a variety of activities.

Here are seven places with the oldest population:

1. Pittsburgh
ranks as one of the oldest populations in the nation with nearly 24 percent of its residents older than 60, Forbes reported. The once-thriving industrial city has seen many younger people leave for the South and West. Pittsburgh attracts fewer immigrants than other retirement places, so the population remains high with senior residents.

2. Scottsdale, Arizona, had the oldest citizens of any city in America under 100,000 in population, U.S. News and World Report noted in 2011. The median age was at 45.4, some eight years higher than the national average. The warm and sometimes hot Arizona temperatures and dry weather attract many retirees.

3. Florida is a retirement haven for seniors around the country. Clearwater had the highest median age of any large city in the state at 43.8 years, according to U.S. News. The warm Florida climate and Clearwater’s location near the beach along the Gulf of Mexico make it one of the most attractive retirement places.

4. St. Petersburg, Florida, also attracts seniors with the beauty of the Tampa Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. Aside from the warm Florida weather, the city offers retirees cultural activities from the art and history museums.

5. Thousand Oaks
has the oldest population in California, U.S. News said. The warm climate, open space and about 75 miles of trails makes it a pleasant home for active seniors. The city is only 12 miles from the Pacific Ocean and is near the Santa Monica Mountains.

6. Buffalo, New York
, may not have the year-round warmth of areas in the South and West, but it continues to attract seniors. More than 20 percent of the population is older than age 60, according to Forbes. NerdWallet named Buffalo as one of the best retirement places for aging baby boomers. Along with cultural attractions, the city also offers seniors pleasant drinking and dining establishments.

7. Hot Springs, Arkansas, has seniors that make up about 20 percent of its population, Business Insider said. They benefit from the low cost of living. Hot Springs has a historic district, restaurants, art festivals, and galleries.
