EBay's StubHub Says Arrests Planned Over Hacking of Accounts

Wednesday, 23 July 2014 11:09 AM EDT

EBay Inc.’s online ticket reselling unit StubHub said arrests will be made today stemming from an international police investigation into the online hacking of about 1,600 customer accounts last year.

The hackers obtained login and password information through data breaches of other websites and retailers, or by deploying malware on personal computers, StubHub said today in an e-mailed statement. StubHub’s systems weren’t affected, the company said.

“We are pleased to see these cybercriminals brought to justice,” Glenn Lehrman, a StubHub spokesman, said today in an e-mailed statement. Lehrman confirmed that 1,600 accounts were compromised.

StubHub, based in San Francisco, credited the New York District Attorney’s Office, the New York Police Department and authorities “around the world” for investigating organized crime targeting the ticketing industry. The company didn’t elaborate on the number of arrests or where they would happen.

Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. is scheduled to hold a press conference today with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to announce arrests and criminal charges in an international hacking case spanning from Russia to New York, according to a statement that didn’t identify the company involved. City of London, Ontario, police will also announce arrests, it said.
