Amazon in coming weeks will roll out “Rufus,” a shopping assistant that uses generative artificial intelligence, CNBC reports.
Rufus will help shoppers search for and select products by either typing or speaking their questions into a search bar on Amazon’s mobile app.
The AI assistant will be able to understand conversational questions, such as, “What are the differences between trail and road running shoes?” and “Compare drip and pour-over coffee makers.”
Rufus will get its information from Amazon’s product catalog, customer reviews, Q&As, and information across the web.
“Rufus meaningfully improves how easy it is for customers to find and discover the best products to meet their needs,” Amazon blogged Thursday.
Amazon CEO Andy Jassy has said the company plans to incorporate generative AI, or sophisticated artificial intelligence capable of learning, across all of its businesses.
In recent months, Amazon’s AI tools have included Q, a chatbot for businesses; Bedrock, for cloud customers; and a tool to help third-party sellers write listings.
Already, Amazon has used AI to answer customers’ questions and summarize reviews.
The online giant is currently testing Rufus among a select group of users.
