Billionaire philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, wife of Amazon billionaire Jeff Bezos for 25 years, has filed for divorce from former science teacher Dan Jewett.
Wed only last year, Scott and Jewett had forged a partnership in charitable giving, but his name has been stripped in recent weeks from websites and other communications on the couple’s philanthropy, The New York Times reports.
The couple filed their petition for divorce Monday in Washington’s King County Superior Court. The separation contract, which is not public, contains terms of division of property, according to court documents.
Scott, originally worth $62 billion following her divorce from Bezos in 2019, is currently worth $27.8 billion, following stock market declines and $12 billion in donations she has made in the three years since her divorce, according to Bloomberg.
As the Times puts it, Scott became one of the most celebrated and “influential philanthropists” in the world, writing, “She rocketed to global attention as she began giving away money at a pace rarely seen in the philanthropic world.”
Scott pledged she would continue to give away her fortune, in a 2019 letter on Giving Pledge, a website where wealthy people promise to give away half of their wealth. But Scott took benevolence a step further, committing to “keep at it until the safe is empty.”
Last month, Scott gave away two Beverly Hills homes worth $55 million to the California Community Foundation, which grants money for affordable housing.
Scott met Jewett, a popular teacher, at the prestigious Seattle school Lakeside, where the four Bezos children attend.
