New York is considering relaxing work qualifications for 4,000 jobs to hire migrants who have federal authorization to work, according to a state Civil Service Commission memo seen by the New York Post.
New York would create “transitional titles” to hire the migrants for “hard-to-recruit, entry-level” jobs in the state, such as caring for the developmentally disabled, custodial work, food service, facilities repair, and clerical positions.
The plan would waive requirements such as English proficiency, proof of education, and previous employment.
“Governor Hochul has prioritized modernizing our state workforce and eliminating red tape, and she has instituted a series of reforms to achieve that goal,” said a spokesperson for New York Gov. Kathy Hochul.
“This initiative, which has not yet been implemented, would offer temporary employment opportunities that are available for anyone who can legally work in the United States,” the spokesperson added.
The memo says: “The creation of these transitional titles is a win-win for the state and its agencies to connect qualified and motivated individuals with meaningful jobs and opportunity; help solve the migrant crisis; and rebuild the state workforce.”
As of November, 2,850 of the 47,000 migrants being sheltered in New York state have been approved to work.
