For the past eight years, the Obama doctrine has come down to nine words: Embolden our enemies. Undermine our friends. Diminish our country.
Examples abound but insufficient attention has been given to date to this doctrine’s application with respect to Cuba.
With President Obama’s decision to normalize relations with the communist dictatorship of the unreformed and unrepentant Castro brothers, American taxpayers have replaced their former patrons — the Soviet Union and Venezuela — as the source of life-support for that odious regime.
In so doing, the United States not only abandoned those in Cuba and elsewhere who have long sought to free the island from the Castros’ tyranny. The Associated Press reports that we have also wound up directly enriching the virulently anti-American Cuban military, which basically owns the country’s tourism industry, among other enterprises.
That’s bad for Cubans, and bad for us.
