Pentagon Needs a Warrior Like Gen. Mattis

President-elect Donald Trump has selected a warrior to be our next defense secretary.

General James Mattis is an inspired, and inspiring, choice — one calculated to symbolize and execute a return to the time-tested strategy Ronald Reagan called “peace through strength.”

The general is a storied combat commander, a serious student of military history who has made a fair amount of it. He is beloved by troops whose sacrifice he has shared and whose future he’ll do much to shape, particularly with respect to their readiness and morale.

In the days ahead, we will learn more about how both Gen. Mattis, and the president he’ll serve, will try to undo the immense damage done by the Obama administration to our military, its emboldening of our enemies — foreign and domestic — and its undermining of our alliances and interests overseas.

Meantime, let’s roll.
