Hillary Clinton is holding a lead over Donald Trump, even as her supporters show far less interest in the race than do those of the GOP nominee, a new Washington Post/ABC News poll shows.
Here's the breakdown among likely voters in a four-way race:
- Clinton: 46 percent
- Trump: 41 percent
- Libertarian candidate Gary Johnson: 9 percent
- Green Party nominee Jill Stein: 2 percent
In a head-to-head matchup, support goes this way:
- Clinton: 45 percent
- Trump: 35 percent
The overall margin of error in the survey is plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
The issue of trust and honesty still bedevils each candidate; more than 6 in 10 voters say neither is, and almost 2 in 3 voters disapprove of Trump’s explanation of his policy for handling undocumented immigrants while 6 in 10 say Clinton granted special favors to donors of the Clinton Foundation.
The poll also shows 64 percent disapprove of Clinton's handling of questions about her use of personal email while secretary of state, in what the pollster says is the highest level since last year.
On the question of voters' interest in their candidate's campaign and likelihood of voting, here's the split:
- Trump: 61 percent of supporters following the election closely; 93 percent certain to vote
- Clinton: 45 percent following race closely; 80 percent certain to vote.
-
In other findings:
- 58 percent of voters expect Clinton to win; 18 percent think she'll do so easily
- Almost 9 in 10 Clinton supporters think she'll win; just under 7 in 10 Trump backers feel the same about him.
- Clinton has a 75 percent-13 percent lead among nonwhite voters, similar to President Barack Obama’s edge in 2012.
- 86 percent of likely GOP voters supporting Trump, up from 80 percent in early August.
- 90 percent support of likely Democrats support Clinton, slightly down from the 93 percent in August.
- Independents split 39 percent to 37 percent between Clinton and Trump.
