A teenager who was shot five times last week while locking the door of a classroom during one of the nation’s worst mass shootings in history still saved himself and 20 other students, Time reports.
Anthony Borges, 15, is still recovering in the hospital after 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz opened fire in a Florida high school, killing 17 and injuring 17. Borges was shot in his back and his legs as he locked the door and blocked the doorway with his body.
Borges on Sunday received a visit from Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel, and was flanked with balloons and gifts wishing him well.
“The Sheriff was honored to visit Anthony Borges, 15, in the hospital. Anthony was shot five times. Fortunately, he is recovering, but has a long road ahead with more surgeries needed. Please join us in praying for the swift recovery of Anthony and all others from #StonemanDouglas,” a tweet from the Broward County Sheriff read.
Borges’ best friend, Carlos Rodriguez, said Borges’ quick-thinking saved the lives of many.
"None of us knew what to do. So, he took the initiative to just save his other classmates," he told ABC News.
