Two anti-abortion groups are worried language defunding Planned Parenthood will be removed from the Senate's healthcare bill, the Washington Examiner reported.
The Susan B. Anthony List and Family Research Council issued a joint statement expressing fears senators could end up taking out the language that would defund Planned Parenthood for a year and prevent tax credits from being used to fund abortions, according to the Examiner.
The groups said they are "very concerned that either of these priorities could be removed from the bill for procedural or political reasons."
And Time magazine noted Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough has not decided whether the provisions meet the standard to be included in the budget reconciliation process.
"If the Republican bill continues to fund or subsidize coverage that has abortion coverage, the pro-life community is going to have a serious problem," says David Christensen, the Family Research Council's vice president of government affairs.
Republican Sens. Susan Collins of Maine and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska said they don't support defunding Planned Parenthood. Their votes are considered crucial since Republicans hold a slim 52-48 majority in the Senate, the Examiner pointed out.
Meanwhile, the two anti-abortion groups, while expressing their concern, remain hopeful the Senate will be able to keep the anti-abortion language in the bill.
"We are confident that the pro-life Senate will ultimately move forward with our pro-life priorities intact," the groups said.
