Bill Donohue: Charlie Hebdo 'Pornographers Disguised as Satirists'

By    |   Thursday, 08 January 2015 10:10 PM EST

Catholic League President Bill Donohue doubled down on his comments that the cartoonists killed in a Paris attack on Wednesday provoked the attack by insulting Muslims.

"I think, first of all, they're pornographers disguised as satirists," Dononue said Thursday on Fox News Channel's "The Kelly File." "We're not talking about Mel Brooks, we're talking about the functional equivalent of Larry Flynt going to print."

Donohue sparked controversy on Wednesday when he told Fox News' Neil Cavuto that the killings were wrong, but sparked by "libertines" who insist on continually insulting Muslims.

That doesn't give extremists the rights to kill the offenders, he said, but he said it was the natural outcome of their actions.

Host Megyn Kelly noted that Hustler magazine publisher Larry Flynt's case was a landmark legal decision on freedom of speech.

Donohue agreed, but added, "People have a legal right to insult my religion or somebody else's, they don't have a moral right to do so."

Self-censorship, he said, is the friend of freedom.

"The only people who are responsible here are the murderers, the Muslim barbarians," Donohue said, "and they are a threat to liberty. No question about it. I'm simply saying there's another issue here. That is the necessity of restraint on the part of artists."

Dononue said he is "sick and tired of the narcissism of the artists in this country and abroad who say the only right is my right to do whatever I want."

The magazine's depictions of Mohammed were scatological in nature, Donohue said.

When Kelly said the was the entire point of free speech was to be able to offend, Donohue responded, "If that's the case why don't you show right now what they put on the scatological covers?"
