Bill Kristol: Trump Can Still Win

(MSNBC/"Morning Joe")

Conservative journalist Bill Kristol on Wednesday downplayed the impact that Donald Trump's campaign shakeup will have, but said the GOP nominee can still win the election.

A guest on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program, the editor of the Weekly Standard said despite Trump's unfavorables, this is still an election he can win.

"It's a very unusual and fluid year and more stuff could come out about Hillary Clinton," Kristol said on "Morning Joe."

"The only reason he could win is this: It's a change election . . . If people want change, they're willing to make a lot of excuses for the challenger. Hillary Clinton is the candidate with the status quo."

Not only can Trump win, Kristol said he should be leading in the polls, not trailing.

"This is where it's so unbelievable that Trump is losing," Kristol said. "In a normal year, the third term for one party with Hillary Clinton's unfavorables on the normal break on the issues … the Republicans should be up a couple points in my view. He's losing by 10. That's all about Trump."

Kristol downplayed the impact of Trump hiring Breitbart News Chairman Stephen Bannon to run his campaign.

"I don't think it matters because the problem is Donald Trump. His unfavorability rating has been consistently too high to win a presidential election," Kristol said. "Hillary Clinton's, you would say normally is too high, but she's about 10 points lower than Trump's, and that's what it is about."
