Donald Trump's "overreaction" on Islamic terrorism is "as dangerous as [President] Barack Obama's underreaction," GOP presidential candidate Carly Fiorina said Tuesday, complaining that media plays into Trump's controversial statements every time.
"We all get frustrated when Obama recognizes that the government is incompetent and tramples on our constitutional rights," the former Hewlett-Packard CEO told
Fox News' "America's Newsroom" host Martha MacCallum.
"Donald Trump is saying the government is incompetent, so let's trample on the Constitution by holding a religious test."
But, the media plays up Trump's statements, and "that's all we talk about."
Instead, what leaders should be talking about is a "sensible proposal" to give all investigators access to all the National Security Agency data they need.
"We ought to be talking about a sensible proposal [Texas GOP Rep.] Mike McCaul made yesterday to fix this problem," said Fiorina. "I'm not an establishment insider, I'm an outsider. We settled for an incompetent government for too long."
At the same time, Fiorina complained about the tone of Obama's Oval Office address, saying that when he commented that "Muslim Americans are our friends and neighbors, our co-workers, our sport hero, and yes, they are our men and women in uniform who are willing to die in defense of our country," he was actually scolding Americans.
"I think Barack Obama is lecturing us as usual instead of providing us with leadership and strength, something he's incapable of doing," said Fiorina. "We don't need lectures from him. We need competence. I think that's what's at stake in this election."
And meanwhile, "Donald Trump is Hillary Clinton's Christmas gift wrapped up under a tree," said Fiorina. "If he were to be our nominee, Hillary Clinton will wipe the floor with him and we may lose the Senate and we could lose the House. I'm the lump of coal in her stocking. We have to take our country back."
Further, she said that Trump doesn't want Americans to know his strategy for defeating ISIS.
"We must deny them territory," she said. "We must build up a coalition of Sunni Arabs who will help us fight. We must take advantage of every capability in this country to track down would-be terrorists. We are not engaging the private sector at all.
"We need to engage the private sector. Technology has moved on a long way. 14 years, to be precise, from the Patriot Act and four years from Obama's cyber strategy. We can fix it, but we won't fix it by fear mongering and rabble rousing."
