Schumer: How Did This 'Monster' Acquire These Weapons?

(Washington Post)

Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., on the Senate floor Monday questioned how the Las Vegas shooter acquired the weapons to unleash a shower of bullets down on an outdoor music festival, killing 58 people and injuring at least 515.

"We're left with many questions whose answers we'll be seeking in the coming days and weeks. How did this monster acquire the arsenal he used to rain down death on a crowd of innocence?" Schumer asked.

"Were those guns purchased and compiled legally? What was this person's motive? Is there any history of mental health issues? What circumstances could lead a man to commit such violence on his fellow human beings, complete strangers," he added.

Police said the shooter, 64-year-old Stephen Craig Paddock of Mesquite, Nevada, was found dead in a hotel room with as many as 10 firearms. He opened fire from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino.

Aaron Rouse, the FBI special agent in charge in Las Vegas, said during a press conference Monday no connection had been found "with an international terrorist group."

Investigators are still trying to discern Paddock's motive and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is conducting an "urgent trace" on the weapons Paddock used to determine their origins.

Clark County Sheriff Joseph Lombardo said Paddock brought the weapons into the Mandalay Bay himself and used a "device similar to a hammer" to break the window.
