Conrad Black on SOTU: Nice 'Pep Rally' but Plans Won't Work

In what Fox Business Network host Neil Cavuto called an "in-your-face" State of the Union address, President Barack Obama said three time that he is willing to take action on his own if he can't get Congress to pass laws he wants.

Former media mogul Conrad Black compared it to a "pep rally" filled with platitudes that Americans might like, but that aren't going to work.

Simply calling on Congress to create jobs "and the president will go outside the Constitution and by executive order he'll wave a wand around and he'll sit down and rap with people and things will get better" is no real solution, Black said.

"I think it's a bit rich for the president who was pushing cap-and-trade and telling us about global warming and was very sluggish about offshore drilling and fracking, and needed to be dragged kicking and screaming to do anything about Iran, to take all the credit for such progress as there is in those fields," he said.

On CNN, former GOP House Speaker Newt Gingrich said most people who stayed till the end of the speech would be impressed with it. That doesn't mean, though, that Obama will move the country dramatically, Gingrich said.
