Corey Lewandowski said that the resignation of Trump's campaign manager Paul Manafort is a sign that the Trump campaign is getting more serious.
"People think I won," Lewandoski said, referring to disagreements that he and Manafort had when they worked together on Trump's campaign, which ended with him being fired.
Lewandowski was fired from Trump's campaign manager job and replaced by Manafort, and after that became a CNN commentator.
He made the comments about Manafort during a phone interview on CNN, according to Politico.
"This is about what is best for Donald Trump, what is best for the American people, and what is best to lay out his case that Hillary Clinton is not prepared to be president of the United States."
According to Lewandowski, Manafort's exit is "the step that the campaign has taken to continue to demonstrate how serious they are that it is moving forward and that it is ready for the next 81 days," referring to the remainder of time before the November 8 elections.
Lewandowski spoke on Trump's field team efforts, which were led by Manafort.
"It's been widely reported that it has not been a robust ground effort in states like Florida, that that had not been laid out yet. You cannot blame the candidate for these things," he said.
The CNN commentator concluded with praise for Manafort. "I wish him the absolute very best and he is a true professional, and I know how thankful I was to be able to work next to him as he worked to secure the delegates needed and to execute a convention," Politico reports.
