Hillary Clinton used her own BlackBerry while she served as secretary of state, while her two top aides used government-issued devices that were later destroyed, it was revealed Wednesday.
According to court documents obtained by Judicial Watch, the BlackBerry devices used by Huma Abedin and Cheryl Mills no longer exist.
"[The State Department] does not believe that any personal computing device was issued by the Department to former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and has not located any such device at the Department," the court filing reads. "[The State Department] believes that Ms. Mills and Ms. Abedin were each issued BlackBerry devices. [The State Department] has not located any such device at the Department … Because the devices issued to Ms. Mills and Ms. Abedin would have been outdated models, in accordance with standard operating procedures those devices would have been destroyed or excessed."
The court filing does say that devices turned in by former employees can also be reset and reissued to another employee, but not if they are considered "outdated models."
It was also reported Wednesday that emails from two of Clinton's closest aides — Abedin and Jake Sullivan — were what jump-started the FBI investigation into Clinton's use of a private email setup when she worked at the State Department. The emails contained information that was classified at the time.
FBI investigators are examining the email server Clinton used, which at one point was maintained by a small,
Denver-based company whose office was in a loft apartment. Clinton's server was reportedly in a bathroom closet.
"The questions just keep popping up. Every time the State Department tries to justify its stonewalling, one more bit of information arises," Judicial Watch President Tom Fitton said in a press release. "If the State Department was not providing secure email devices to Mrs. Clinton, who was? Best Buy? Target? Mrs. Clinton clearly did whatever she wanted, without regard to national security or federal records keeping laws."
More than
300 of the emails Clinton claimed were work-related have been flagged as potentially containing classified information, and that was after investigators got through just 20 percent of the 30,000 emails Clinton turned over.
Clinton is the leading Democrat in the race for president but her once sizable lead has slipped in recent weeks, with
Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders starting to look like more of a legitimate challenger.
Clinton talked about her email scandal Tuesday. When asked if she wiped the server clean before turning it over to the FBI, she said, "What, with a cloth or something?"
Clinton that clarified her answer, saying, "I don't know how it works digitally at all."
