A Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee said FBI Director James Comey should resign immediately over his "extremely careless" actions, the Washington Examiner reported.
Using Comey's own words against him, Rep. Steve Cohen, D-Tenn., said Comey's decision to announce a new investigation into newly discovered emails this close to the election is disqualifying.
"If Director Comey cares about the Bureau and the rule of law, as I have felt he has in the past, I'm sure upon reflection of this action he will submit his letter of resignation for the nation's good," Cohen said in a written statement.
"At a minimum, Director Comey's actions are, to use his own verbiage, 'extremely careless' this close to the election and without any substance."
Comey called Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server "extremely careless" back in July while announcing the evidence did not support a criminal charge.
Comey on Friday sent a letter to Congress, announcing the reopening of an investigation into Clinton after the revelation of hundreds of thousands new Clinton emails discovered during the probe into Anthony Weiner's sexting with a 15-year-old girl. Weiner is married to, albeit separated from Huma Abedin, Clinton's top aide.
Cohen sharply criticized the move.
"There is a reason that FBI investigations are not made public until they are completed," Cohen said. "To do so gives an impression of guilt before all the facts are determined."
