Democrats are likely to reclaim the House majority, according to several news reports, a huge victory for the party as it looks to block many of President Donald Trump’s remaining priorities on his agenda, including healthcare, tax cuts and funding for a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border.
Democrats had a 65 percent chance of winning control of the lower chamber. The party will control the House for the first time in eight years if the projections hold true.

Pivotal projected wins included:
- Democrat Jennifer Wexton’s win over GOP Rep. Barbara Comstock to flip the northern Virginia district – Virginia 10th
- Democrat Donna Shalala’s win over Republican Maria Elvira Salazar to secure the GOP-held 27th district in Florida; the Miami seat had been held by retiring GOP Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, who represented the area since 1989
- Democrat Mary Gay Scanlon’s victory over GOP candidate Pearl Kim in Pennsylvania’s 5th district
- Democrat Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s win over Republican Anthony Pappas in New York’s 14th District
- Democrat Debbie Mucarsel-Powell beat Republican Carlos Curbelo in Florida’s 26th District
According to exit polls, two out of every three voters said Trump was a factor in their House vote, with 26 percent saying they cast their vote to express support for the president and 38 percent saying their vote was intended to oppose the president.
