Hillary Clinton is only playing nice with President Barack Obama because she's trying to stay out of legal trouble stemming from the email scandal that has enveloped her presidential campaign, Donald Trump said in a new interview.

Trump, the leading Republican candidate for president, made the remarks to Breitbart News when asked about former President Bill Clinton calling Obama's presidency an "awful legacy."

"If he said that, Hillary will be indicted," Trump said. "In all fairness, that's incredible, because I think she's being nice to Obama for only one reason: She wants to get protected. That's the only reason she's nice to him."

The email scandal, which centered on Clinton's use of a private email address and server during her time as Obama's secretary of state from 2009 to 2013, has dogged her on the campaign trail for more than a year. The Washington Post reported Sunday that 147 FBI agents are investigating the matter and that interviews with Clinton and her aides could happen soon.

Trump said Bill Clinton's statement about Obama's "awful" presidency could be bad for his wife's own White House hopes.

"If Bill Clinton made that statement, that is a disaster for Hillary's election," Trump told Breitbart. "And it's a disaster for the relationship between Hillary and Obama."

Trump has built a significant lead in the primaries leading up to this summer's Republican National Convention, but it appears the race to reach 1,237 delegates to secure the nomination will be tight. If he falls short, the nomination could be anyone's.
