Donald Trump declared Monday that he had the judgment and temperament to be president — and Hillary Clinton countered that her challenger should not have "his hands anywhere near the nuclear codes."

"I have better judgment," the Republican nominee said at the first presidential debate at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y. "I also have a much better temperament than she does, you know?"

Clinton smiled at the statement, as members of the audience laughed.

"I think my strongest asset, maybe, by far is my temperament," he told moderator Lester Holt. "I have a winning temperament.

"I know how to win. She does not."

Clinton countered that nuclear weapons were the greatest threat to global security and that "his cavalier attitude about nuclear weapons is so deeply troubling.

"That is the number one threat we face in the world — and it particularly threatening if terrorists get their hands on a nuclear weapon.

"So a man who can be as easily provoked by a tweet should not have his hands anywhere near the nuclear codes."
