The Dallas Morning News has broken from its longstanding tradition of endorsing Republicans for president with a scathing editorial that claims Donald Trump is not a Republican.
"Donald Trump is no Republican and certainly no conservative," reads the editorial, which was published Monday morning.
The paper's editorial board lays out its case for not supporting Trump by first trying to determine what it means to be a Republican.
"For generations, the answer had been clear: A belief in individual liberty. Free markets. Strong national defense," the editorial reads.
"But what does it mean to be a Republican today? With Donald Trump as the party's new standard-bearer, it's impossible to say."
The Dallas Morning News has backed the Republican presidential candidate in every election since 1968, reports CNN.
After listing examples that attempt to paint a bad picture of Trump, including his proposed Muslim ban, his admiration of Russian President Vladimir Putin, and his belief that U.S. companies with foreign investments should pay a fine, the paper concludes that Trump is not fit to hold the nation's highest political office.
"We have no interest in a Republican nominee for whom all principles are negotiable, nor in a Republican Party that is willing to trade away principle for pursuit of electoral victory," the editorial reads.
"Trump doesn't reflect Republican ideals of the past; we are certain he shouldn't reflect the GOP of the future.
"Donald Trump is not qualified to serve as president and does not deserve your vote."
A new Washington Post/Survey Monkey poll found that Clinton has a strong lead across America. There are several tossup states in which either candidate can win, including Texas — which has voted for the Republican presidential candidate in every election since 1980.
