Poll: Most Trump Voters in Texas Back Secession if Clinton Wins

Almost two-thirds of Donald Trump's supporters in Texas would support a secession movement if Hillary Clinton wins the presidency, left-leaning Public Policy Polling finds. 

When asked if they "support or oppose Texas seceding from the United States," those polled in the Lone Star State responded:

• Would support seceding: 26 percent
• Would oppose: 59 percent
• Not sure: 15 percent

But a marked shift could be seen when "if Hillary Clinton is elected President" was added:

• Would support seceding: 40 percent;
• Would oppose: 48 percent;
• Not sure: 12 percent.

Among likely Trump voters, support was even greater:

• Would support seceding if Clinton elected: 61 percent;
• Would oppose if Clinton elected: 29 percent.

Trump led all contenders when respondents were asked, between the Clinton, Trump, Libertarian Gary Johnson, the Green Party's Jill Stein, independent Evan McMullin, "if the election was today, who would you vote for:"

• Trump: 44 percent;
• Clinton: 38 percent;
• Johnson: 6 percent;
• Stein: 2 percent;
• McMullin: 0 percent;
• Undecided: 10 percent.

Asked for their political views, those polled said they were:

• Somewhat or very conservative: 48 percent;
• Moderate: 30 percent;
• Somewhat or very liberal: 22 percent.

A survey of major polls in the state by Real Clear Politics has Trump beating Clinton by an average of 8.4 percentage points in Texas.

Public Policy Polling surveyed 944 likely voters from Aug. 12 to 14, and 80 percent were contacted by phone, while 20 percent answered questions online. The margin of error is +/- 3.2 percent.
