Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave Aronberg said Wednesday that the simple battery charge brought against Donald Trump's campaign manager, Corey Lewandowski, was filed after an investigation by the Jupiter Police Department in Florida.

"Some media outlets have reported that this office has brought charges against Corey Lewandowski, campaign manager for Donald Trump," Aronberg wrote in a Facebook post. "These reports are false. Our office has taken no action against Mr. Lewandowski.

"The matter was investigated and charged by the Jupiter Police Department, not this office," he said. "We will await the file from the Jupiter Police Department and make a decision on how to proceed in this matter before Mr. Lewandowski's May 4th arraignment."

Lewandowski, 42, faces the misdemeanor count for allegedly intentionally grabbing and bruising the arm of Michelle Fields, 28, a former reporter for Breitbart News, at Trump campaign event at the Trump National Golf Club in Jupiter on March 8.

He turned himself in to police on Tuesday and remains free pending arraignment.

The Boston Herald reported Tuesday that Aronberg, a member of the Florida State Senate from 2002-2010 who became a state attorney in 2012, is a Hillary Clinton supporter and a member of the Democratic presidential front-runner's "Florida Leadership Council." He donated $1,000 to her campaign in January.

Under Florida law, simple battery is defined as intentionally touching or striking a person against their will. For a first offense, it is a misdemeanor in the first degree, which carries a maximum penalty of one year in prison and a $1,000 fine.

Aronberg said that prosecutors have a "legally higher standard of proof" in proving the charge against Lewandowski, "which is beyond a reasonable doubt as well as whether there is a reasonable likelihood of a conviction.

"At this point, our office has not received the case," he said.
