Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has more supporters among military veterans than his Democratic opponent Hillary Clinton, according to a Fox News poll.
The results:
- Trump: 47 percent;
- Clinton: 33 percent;
- Libertarian nominee Gary Johnson: 13 percent;
- Green Party nominee Jill Stein: 2 percent.
The poll results were released one day after Trump made comments that were interpreted by some as being negative toward veterans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder or PTSD.
At a town hall meeting in Herndon, Virginia, Trump said, "When you talk about the mental health problems, when people come back from war and combat — and they see things that maybe a lot of the folks in this room have seen many times over, and you're strong and you can handle it, but a lot of people can't handle it."
Some veterans, including the retired staff sergeant who asked Trump the question, praised the Republican nominee's answer, according to The Washington Post.
The poll was conducted by telephone on Sept. 27-29, among a random national sample of 1,009 registered voters. The results have a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points.
