President Donald Trump, vowing to push immigration policies that assure the safety of American families, assured the tearful parents of two teen girls slain by MS-13 gang members that "320 million hearts are right now breaking for you."
In his first State of the Union speech Tuesday, the president addressed both illegal immigration — and the MS-13 gang that has recruited young illegals into its ruthless ranks, declaring "for decades open borders have allowed drugs and gangs to pour into our most vulnerable communities."
"Struggling communities, especially immigrant communities, will also be helped by immigration policies that focus on the best interests of American workers and American families," he said, adding:
"My duty and the sacred duty of every elected official in this chamber is to defend Americans, to protect their safety, their families, their communities and their right to the American dream. Because Americans are dreamers, too."
Trump pointed to two couples from Long Island, N.Y., Evelyn Rodriguez, Freddy Cuevas, Elizabeth Alvarado, and Robert Mickens — whose daughters, Kayla Cuevas and Nisa Mickens, were slain in September 2016 "on the eve of Nisa's 16th birthday."
"I want you to know that 320 million hearts are right now breaking for you," Trump told the parents, who openly dabbed at tears and bowed their heads in grief.
