George Will: Bill O'Reilly Is 'Replaceable'

Wednesday, 19 April 2017 08:32 PM EDT

The ouster of Fox News star Bill O'Reilly is no great loss because the fiery host is "replaceable," conservative commentator George Will said Wednesday.

In an interview on CNBC's "Power Lunch," Will – who O'Reilly called a "hack" after Will panned his book "Killing Reagan" – fired back with an acid-tipped analysis of the Fox fixture's departure amid allegations of sexual harassment.

"On air he's reckless," Will declared. "Off the air he's reckless and bullying. There's a seamlessness here."

"I think Fox News has to decide what it wants to be," he continued. "It seems as long as Bill O'Reilly is the face of Fox News and, let's face it, he is, their ability to expand their brand and to diversify their audience and become something other than a stale product depends on moving beyond Bill O'Reilly."

When it was noted that Fox viewers are famously loyal, Will said "the question is, are they loyal to Bill O'Reilly or are they loyal to the Fox brand itself."

"When Megyn Kelly left and Tucker [Carlson] was put in her spot, nothing happened," Will said. "The viewers remained happy. I have a feeling Mr. O'Reilly is replaceable. The graveyards are full of indispensable men, as Charles de Gaulle said."
