Conservative talk radio host Glenn Beck on Saturday compared GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump to disgraced Democrat Anthony Weiner, who lost his job as a congressman from New York in 2011 after a sexting scandal.
"Donald Trump is the right's Anthony Weiner," Beck said to Business Insider. "This will only end in epic shame."
Beck, long a Trump critic, was referring to an audio tape released Friday of Trump making lewd comments about women. Multiple Republicans have distanced themselves from Trump, and even his running mate, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence, condemned the comments.
"I would hope that conservatives will take a step back and see who they are looking to as their champion," Beck told Business Insider. "For the good of our credibility I would beg people not to defend this or excuse this horrific behavior. If this was said in front of you, what would you say? If your son said this, what would you say? If it was said about your daughter or it was your wife, what would you say?"
Beck mentioned conservatives in the 1990s who argued that "character matters" in relation to President Bill Clinton's own scandals.
"For those who said it didn't matter, you are seeing the direct result of dismissing behavior in our leaders," he continued. "I have daughters and am so troubled that some are saying that this is the way guys are, or worse yet, that this is old behavior."
Beck said he has raised his own son to distance himself from people like Trump.
"Where are the good men who will stand up for our wives and daughters?" he asked.
"Second, remember Trump has clearly stated multiple times that he has never done anything where he needed forgiveness. Where was his pivot point. This IS who he is."
Trump has vowed to remain in the race despite the growing calls for him to drop out.
