Five Republicans running for House seats have threatened to slap libel suits on broadcasters in regards to TV ads that link them to Donald Trump, their party's presidential nominee.
The Huffington Post reported Reps. Bob Dold (Illinois), Mike Coffman (Colorado), David Jolly (Florida), and John Katko (New York), along with Brian Fitzpatrick (Pennsylvania) have joined forces on the topic. Of the five, Fitzpatrick is the only candidate who is not currently in office.
The five men have all said publicly they do not support Trump's presidential bid. But that hasn't stopped the Democratic Party from running ads that link them to the billionaire real estate mogul.
The TV spots continue to run in the candidates' home states despite their calls to have them taken off the air.
The five candidates' decisions to distance themselves from Trump is not an isolated practice. Several other down-ballot GOP candidates in the Nov. 8 election have tried to keep Trump at arm's length, fearful of how their Democratic opponents could exploit any relationship they have with Trump, who has led a polarizing campaign despite being named his party's nominee over the summer.
One Senate race in particular could be devastating to the Republican Party. With Democrat Harry Reid retiring, his Nevada seat is up for grabs. Joe Heck is the Republican candidate in that race but his refusal to get behind Trump could cost him a chance of winning — and it has the potential to hand the Democrats majority in the chamber.
