Hillary Clinton leads Donald Trump by five percentage points in Michigan, according to a new Emerson College poll, down from seven in an earlier survey.
The latest poll, which included third-party candidates Libertarian Gary Johnson and the Green Party's Jill Stein, shows voters backing:
- Clinton: 45 percent;
- Trump: 40 percent;
- Johnson: 7 percent;
- Stein: 3 percent.
Talking Points Memo notes that a recent Suffolk University poll showed Clinton leading Trump 44 percent to 37 percent. The Emerson poll also puts Clinton up by three points in Pennsylvania and tied with Trump in Ohio, a key battleground state.
"While the horse race in all three polls is within the margin of error, there is a strong expectation that Clinton will win the presidency,” Emerson College said about its survey, citing responses from Ohio voters, 54 percent of whom think Clinton will win compared with 35 percent who say it will be Trump. The Boston-based school said the results in Pennsylvania and Michigan also gave Clinton the edge, in terms of expectations.
Emerson surveyed 800 likely voters in Michigan from Aug. 25-28, and the results have a margin of error of +/- 3.4 percentage points.
