By    |   Thursday, 05 June 2014 09:58 AM EDT

An Obama administration official posted a series of controversial tweets Wednesday night speculating about the motives of American soldier Bowe Bergdahl who was captured by the Taliban.

Brandon Friedman, deputy assistant secretary for public affairs for the Department of Housing and Urban Development, wrote on his Twitter feed that Bergdahl may have wandered off because his platoon was full of "psychopaths."

According to The Weekly Standard, Friedman has previously held positions at the Department of Veterans Affairs and VoteVets, a PAC dedicated to getting liberal veterans elected to office.
