Jeb Bush is only polling in the single digits in most national surveys, including a
Quinnipiac University report that puts him in fifth place with 5 percent, but he said Wednesday that polls are "irrelevant at this time," and he believes he will eventually fare well against front-runner Donald Trump.
"We are making good steady progress, and we have the best organization in the states," Bush told
Fox News' "Happening Now" program. "I am working hard and we are making steady progress . . . Ask what is going on in February and the polls will be more relevant."
Further, Bush said he feels good about where he is in the polls, because as the elections get closer, people will want to know "who has leadership skills to solve these problems and keep us safe."
President Barack Obama was "untested with nothing in his background that would suggest he could lead," said Bush, and he thinks voters will "look for someone who has not been necessarily a Washington insider, but someone who has the practical experience to be able to make tough decisions and stick with it."
But he doesn't think that Trump, who has hit the top of nearly every poll, is qualified to be that president.
"If you listen to him talk as it relates to ISIS or Syria, he is not a serious person," said Bush.
"He gets his information from websites and watches the shows on Sunday and spews out so much that it's confusing. At the end of the day, the people are going to want to know who will sit behind a big desk, who can make these tough decisions. [Someone who] will lead our country towards a place where we are more secure, and have a growing economy. When we get to that point in this stage of the campaign, I will fare pretty well against Donald Trump."
Also on Wednesday, Bush told a taping for "Iowa Press" that a
Trump presidency would be dangerous, and on Fox, he called him unfit for the office.
"He's not qualified to be commander
in chief and leader of the free world," said Bush.
