Sen. Jeff Sessions said Tuesday that he would enforce the nation's antitrust laws as attorney general and that "certain mergers should not occur."

"I have no hesitation to enforce antitrust law," the Alabama Republican told the Senate Judiciary Committee at his confirmation hearing. "I have no hesitation to say certain mergers should not occur.

"There will not be political influence in that process."

Democrat Sen. Amy Klobuchar of Minnesota noted that large corporate mergers had more than doubled between 2010 and 2015, from 716 to 1,801, and that a huge wave of consolidations have occurred in the last 18 months.

Among those currently under consideration by the Federal Communications Commission is the $85.4 billion acquisition of Time Warner Inc. by AT&T Corp., which also owns DirecTV.

The Judiciary Committee held hearings on the proposed deal last month.

President-elect Donald Trump slammed the proposed merger during the campaign, arguing that it would generate extreme media concentration.

Bloomberg News reported earlier this month that Trump remained opposed to the deal, though he has remained silent on the issue since the election.
