Boehner Questions Whether 'Justice' Served in Chokehold Death

By    |   Thursday, 04 December 2014 02:51 PM EST

House Speaker John Boehner is joining a growing chorus questioning the New York grand jury's decision not to indict a white police officer in the chokehold death of a black man who resisted arrest, Buzzfeed reports.

Boehner said he is pondering congressional hearings on the matter as protests continue amid heightened racial strife after a similar incident in Ferguson, Missouri, which led to riots and a questioning of the judicial system's fairness.

"The American people deserve more answers about what really happened here. And was our system of justice handled properly?" Boehner said of the Eric Garner case, according to Buzzfeed.

Protests in New York have continued for a second day, Yahoo reported after a grand jury released its decision in the case of Garner, who died after he resisted arrest and was subdued by police who used a chokehold maneuver forbidden by department procedure.

Garner's apprehension by police was caught on video as he gasped that he could not breathe, a rallying cry used by those protesters outraged that the case would not go to trial.

More social justice rallies have been planned around the country, CBS Local noted, including a Dec. 13 march in Washington, D.C., led by the Rev. Al Sharpton.

He called on the federal government to intervene and has planned a civil rights summit to discuss an issue that he says must be re-examined.

"The federal government must do in the 21st century what they did in the mid-20th century — federal intervention had to come into the South to protect people’s civil rights and voting rights," Sharpton said. "Federal intervention must come now."
