Former Ambassador to the U.N. John Bolton praised Donald Trump's foreign policy chops for correctly framing the war on terrorism and being consistent with "mainstream conservative thinking."
In an opinion piece he wrote for The Wall Street Journal, Bolton said the analysis Trump gave in his speech last week on global terrorism "fits well within mainstream conservative and Republican thinking."
"Mr. Trump rightly sees an ideological war being waged against the West by a hateful, millenarian obsession targeting core American constitutional and philosophical principles," Bolton wrote for the Journal.
On the other side, Bolton wrote, President Obama and Hillary Clinton still see terrorism as a "law enforcement issue," failing "to grasp the ideological war we are in and therefore refuse to combat the enemy effectively."
Further, Bolton supports Trump's stance that limits on immigration is a defensive tactic the U.S. must use to keep out those who would aim to kill Americans.
"Confronted with ideological threats, America is entirely justified in raising appropriate immigration protections, which is neither unprecedented nor contrary to existing law," Bolton wrote.
Bolton urged Trump to steer that policy debate into the fore of the campaign.
"National security should be central to the 2016 presidential contest. Mr. Trump … needs to maintain his focus and discipline, and by so doing compel Mrs. Clinton to defend her intention to continue President Obama’s failed polices," Bolton concluded.
