Donald Trump's campaign manager Kellyanne Conway said Monday she accepts that the case against Hillary Clinton for her use of a private email server is "closed," while criticizing the former secretary of state for her series of negative ads attacking Trump as Election Day draws near.
"It doesn't help Hillary Clinton that we're talking about the emails," Conway told ABC "Good Morning America" host George Stephanopoulos. "I think she would rather be on a more positive message.
"I'm struck that Mr. Trump is out there, five, six states a day, making an argument about what's next after Obamacare, how to make us more prosperous and safe, giving a more uplifting visionary [view]. Hillary Clinton is spending tens of millions of dollars on negative ads."
Last last month, FBI Director James Comey wrote in a letter to congressional leaders that information turned up that could potentially be added to the investigation into her email server, but on Sunday, in a different letter, Comey wrote that nothing had changed his opinion from July, when he said he could not recommend charges against the former secretary of state.
"He said on July 7 she was reckless and careless," said Conway. "She should not have set up the private email server. She lied about the number of devices she had. She said one. Jim Comey said under oath about seven. Turned out to be about 13. She lied about having classified information. I think her honest and trustworthy numbers have never budged."
Meanwhile, Conway also said she is encouraged with Trump's standings, and that Republicans tend to vote stronger on the day of an election. She also thinks a Midwest state, such as Minnesota or Michigan, could be key to a Trump win.
Conway, also appearing on MSNBC's "Morning Joe" program, said she is optimistic about Trump's chances of reaching 270 electoral college votes.
"We're going into her 248 blue wall," Conway said of votes coming from blue states such as Minnesota, where Trump held a rally Sunday. She noted that people parked up to a mile away to walk to the rally, telling the program that people who would do that will be sure to vote for a candidate.
"We have six different routes to 270," she told the program.
She also denied on the program reports that the campaign had taken control of Trump's Twitter account or his telephone — while implying that he calls show host Mika Brzezinski at times.
When BBC's Katty Kay asked about the news report, Conway responded, "He has his phone — call him right now! Here. He's probably watching and he'll call me as I exit the stage. It's a mystery to all of us when this man sleeps. I'm sure he's watching right now so he'll probably call Mika or me afterwards."
Trump and Brzezinski have sparred often online, with the presidential nominee ridiculing her on-air assertions and labeling her at times as being "neurotic" and for having a "mental breakdown" on the air.
