Kellyanne Conway 'Confounded' By Clinton Lodging 'Alt-Right' Attack

("CBS This Morning")

Kellyanne Conway on Thursday dismissed any link between Donald Trump and the nouveau "alt-right" movement, telling CBS News that she's "confounded" by Hillary Clinton's plan to lob such an attack.

Clinton has previewed a speech she intends to give Thursday in Nevada in which she's going to accuse Trump of "taking a hate movement mainstream."

"I'm just confounded that this is what Secretary Clinton is going to tell the American people after she's so scarce," Conway told "CBS This Morning," noting that Clinton hasn't held a press conference in over 250 days.

Conway said she's only "read about" the so-called alt-right movement, despite its link to Breitbart News, run by new Trump campaign CEO Steve Bannon, but denied it's a part of any strategy.

"I'm not that familiar with it to be frank with you," Conway said. "I think we're also cherry picking headlines from a website, and is Hillary Clinton running against a website? We've never even discussed it internally. It's certainly not a part of our strategy meetings. It's nothing that Mr. Trump says out on the stump."

Conway said Clinton should be focusing on substantive policy issues, but bristled when asked if Trump's attack on Clinton as a "bigot" Wednesday was substantive.

"Have you seen what he is called by her and others on a daily basis?" Conway said. "People get away with calling him everything in the book, and objective journalists, they'll laugh at that, put it on their Twitter feeds."
