Within hours after House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy pulled out of the race for speaker, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee sent out an email seeking to raise $100,000 "immediately" to "capitalize on the Republicans' dysfunction and win the House to preserve President [Barack] Obama's legacy."
"We have two major pieces of news," the email began, which was sent at 2:12 p.m. with "Breaking" in the first line of the address.
"Kevin McCarthy, the HEAVY favorite to replace Boehner, just dropped out of the race," the email said. "They are truly sinking to a new low of dysfunction."
The solicitation also disclosed that the party had new polling data showing that "because of this endless Republican dysfunction, Democrats have a chance to win back the House!"
The email also urges donors to "act quickly."
McCarthy, 50, of California, bowed out of the race to succeed Speaker John Boehner at a meeting this morning of the House Republican Conference.
The conference was expected to name its speaker candidate Thursday, with the full House casting votes on Oct. 29.
McCarthy was expected to get at least 200 votes, though he needed 218 to win. More than 40 members of the conservative House Freedom Caucus had opposed McCarthy's candidacy and had planned to nominate Florida Rep. Daniel Webster for the post.
McCarthy announced his decision about 1:15 p.m., with Boehner issuing a statement shortly after 1:30 saying that he would remain the House's top Republican until a successor is elected.
Boehner, 65, who has represented Ohio in the chamber since 1990, abruptly announced last month that he was quitting Congress at the end of the month.
McCarthy, who is in his fifth term, said that he was stepping down it was "best that we have a new face" to lead House Republicans. He will remain as majority leader, to which he was elected last year after Eric Cantor lost a bruising Virginia primary race to newcomer Dave Brat.
In the DCCC email, it asks for contributions ranging from $5 to $250, with an entry for those wishing to "donate another amount."
The committee later sent out a tweet urging Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, also of California, to be elected speaker:
