Marco Rubio's departure from the Republican presidential race Tuesday proved that "money didn't matter" in the Florida primary battle, political strategist Dick Morris told Newsmax TV.

"It didn't matter," he told host J.D. Hayworth on Newsmax TV's "America Votes: 2016" in an interview. "No matter how much the establishment spent in Florida — $15 million to $20 million, where you would see three or four Rubio or anti-[Donald]Trump ads an hour.

"Over the course of a night, you'd see 10 of them," he said. "It didn't make a damn bit of difference.

"In a year when everybody's bemoaning Citizens United and billions and billions, you are having a billionaire win the nomination so far," he added, referring to Trump. "But he's doing it without buying it. He's not spending money on it.

"The fascinating thing here is that we're all watching before our eyes the growing importance of money. If, in the 1960s, we saw the importance of political machines — and they crashed and burned — we are now watching the importance of money."
