Mark Cuban: Trump's Net Worth Is a 'Play Number'

By    |   Monday, 20 July 2015 10:36 PM EDT

Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban said Monday that Donald Trump's claimed net worth of more than $10 billion is a "play number" that doesn't necessarily mean he has a lot of available cash.

On the messaging app Cyber Dust that he founded last year, Cuban questions just how wealthy Trump really is.

"He has been bragging that he is worth north of ten billion dollars," Cuban writes of Trump, according to The Dallas Morning News. "Ok. While's it's a big number, it's not an important number. In fact it's a play number.

"Let's say you own a painting that gets appraised at 10 billion dollars. That gives you a net worth of 10 billion. But that does not mean you have a lot of cash[.]

"In fact it's possible to be worth billions, but not be able to pay your rent[.]"

Cuban then explains that while we don't know how much cash Trump actually has, having cash at hand is essential for a presidential campaign.

"How much cash does Donald have? We don't know for sure. But we do know whatever cash he has, post his several corporate bankruptcies, he hates to spend it," Cuban writes.

"And the one thing about the race for the Presidency is that it takes a lot of CASH[.]

"Not net worth. Cash. Cash. Cash[.]"

"We have yet to see Trump spend much on building an organization, which. Is critical to getting votes. We have yet to see that he has raised money from supporters.

"After all who feels the need to donate money to a guy who says he is worth 10 billion dollars?

"It's the Trump Conundrum. He is a Paper Tiger.

"It's very possible that he doesn't have the cash himself and has bragged himself into a position where he can't afford the cash it takes to run for President !"

It was reported last week that Trump is financing his own campaign with a $1.8 million loan he provided himself. He has not actively solicited campaign money from anyone, while records showed that he has taken in $92,000 from outside sources.

Trump's campaign bank account had a reported $488,000 left at the end of June.

Trump has made headlines for his comments about Mexicans and his recent words about Arizona Sen. John McCain, but he is leading the crowded GOP field of contenders in one poll.

Cyber Dust is a messaging app whose messages delete anywhere from 20 seconds to 100 seconds after they are read, depending on their length.
