McConnell Says Infrastructure Plan 'Needs to Be Credibly Paid For'

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky told Newsmax TV on Thursday that the Congress should pass legislation to improve the nation's crumbling infrastructure, but that "it needs to be credibly paid for."

"We're not interested in another $900 billion stimulus," the six-term Republican said in an exclusive interview, referring to the 2009 effort. "You remember that at the beginning of the Obama administration?

"They went out and borrowed almost a trillion dollars and nobody could figure out what happened to it."

President Donald Trump has called for spending as much as $1 trillion in upgrades, to be financed by public and private investment, in hopes of putting Americans to work and boosting the economy.

"It needs to be credibly paid for," McConnell said. "What's the size of the package? How lengthy a period of time? How are you going to pay for it?

"We anticipate a very significant infrastructure package being recommended to us sequentially, probably later in the year after tax reform."
