Donald Trump's running mate avoided questions about Mexico funding Trump's proposed border wall only hours after the candidate met with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto.
Indiana Gov. Mike Pence was asked by reporters if Mexico would finance the wall on Wednesday night, after the meeting between Trump and Peña Nieto.
"Give me a couple hours, and I'll give you a real solid answer to that question," Pence responded.
Earlier in the day, appearing on CNN, Pence said Trump had no need to speak to the Mexican president about the border wall.
"A whole range of topics were discussed in the meeting and the subject of the wall was discussed, but getting into the details and negotiations of getting into the wall, it really wasn't that kind of a meeting," Pence said. He added that Trump is "an experienced negotiator."
"As I was told, going into this meeting, both of those parties were very clear they had a difference of opinion about who would pay for the wall. There was no reason to discuss that at the meeting," Pence continued.
"Who pays for the wall? We didn't discuss," Trump had said upon being asked at a news briefing after the meeting with Peña Nieto, CNN reports. "We did discuss the wall. We didn't discuss payment of the wall. That'll be for a later date."
Peña Nieto said that "at the start of the conversation with Donald Trump, I made it clear that Mexico will not pay for the wall," in a tweet Wednesday.
