President Donald Trump's State of the Union mention of a surge of working women got newly elected female House lawmakers on their feet for a spontaneous celebration — a demonstration that elicited a jokey admonition from Trump — and a tart response from House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif.
"No one has benefitted more from a thriving economy than women who have filled 58 percent of the newly created jobs last year," Trump declared, prompting an immediate response from several rows of new House lawmakers all dressed in white, who stood up en masse and congratulated each other with high-fives and big grins.
"You weren't supposed to do that," Trump said, adding quickly: "Thank you very much. Thank you very much. All Americans can be proud that we have more women in the workforce than ever before."
Pelosi's Twitter account banged out a quick rejoinder.
"Trump tells our women: 'you weren't supposed to do that.' We've heard enough. He wants us to believe that he and his administration are fighting for women. LIES. There's a reason why support among women and Independents is dropping."
