Newt Gingrich declared Sunday that erratic behavior doesn't disqualify Donald Trump from being president of the United States.

In an interview on "Fox News Sunday With Chris Wallace," the former GOP House Speaker, who has said the GOP nominee has two personalities — a "big Trump" and a "little Trump" — was asked if Americans could afford having a president whose behavior changes so drastically.

"Of course you can," Gingrich replied. "I think we had a number of presidents who had interesting challenges in their personality."

Gingrich touted Trump as a far superior candidate than Democratic rival Hillary Clinton, according to excerpts posted ahead of the broadcast by The Hill.

"I'm willing to concede that Trump on occasion is crass, but I'd like my opponents to concede that Hillary on occasion is corrupt," he said, adding: "You have a candidate for president who under any reasonable standard would have been indicted."

"Trump is not perfect, but she sure ain't perfect, either, and she's a much greater threat to our system than Donald Trump is," Gingrich said.
