Newt Gingrich has given rave reviews to Donald Trump's hardline speech on immigration and his visit to Mexico.
In a tweet posted Thursday, the former Republican House Speaker said:
Gingrich, a one-time GOP presidential candidate himself, also pointed out the historical significance of the timing of the billionaire real-estate tycoon's speech and brief trip to Mexico City.
On Wednesday, Trump met with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto for conversation on the future of U.S. immigration policy.
The meeting came despite protests from former Mexico president Vincente Fox and others furious about Trump's calls for a border wall paid for by Mexico and at his statement about many Mexican immigrants being "rapists" and "murderers."
Trump then flew to Phoenix, Arizona where he delivered a hardline speech on immigration, repeating his vow that Mexico will be responsible for financing a 10-foot tall barrier separating the United States from Mexico.
He also promised a mass deportation of illegal immigrants.
