Sarah Palin has come out swinging at Hillary Clinton for her criticism of Donald Trump as the candidate for white supremacists, saying the Democratic presidential candidate was friends with a onetime Ku Klux Klan member.

And the former Alaska governor and 2008 vice-presidential running mate of John McCain also calls out the media for allegedly helping the Democratic presidential nominee's campaign.

"Leftists throw down the race card in a despicable manner in order to distract from revelations of crony corruption on steroids within the Clinton Foundation and Hillary's State Department," Palin said on her Facebook page.

"Donald J. Trump was NEVER called a 'racist' or a 'bigot' until he chose to run against the anointed Democrat leader, Hillary Clinton. For decades, Trump has enjoyed close relationships with Americans of all races, colors, creeds, genders, and demographic.

"The same media covering his relationships with his diverse friends, colleagues and competitors just got sucked in to the Left's politics of personal destruction by not holding Hillary accountable for her sinfully false accusation of racism in the Trump camp."

Clinton on Thursday ripped Trump for building his campaign "on prejudice and paranoia" and "taking hate groups mainstream." And in her new campaign ad, Trump is praised by members of the Ku Klux Klan.

Palin, who has endorsed Trump, believes Clinton supporters have to weigh in their candidate's own past before she goes after the billionaire real-estate tycoon on racial issues.

"It's beyond the pale that Hillary slaps the 'racist' label on Trump, thus labeling his supporters the same, for this is the politician who called one of the most renowned former KKK members & recruiter — the late Democrat U.S. Senator Robert Byrd — her friend, her mentor and a man of "eloquence and nobility! That's the pot calling the kettle black, eh, Hillary?" she said.

Byrd, who died in 2010, favored racial segregation, filibustered against the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and joined the Ku Klux Klan — all of which he later renounced, calling his KKK membership "the greatest mistake I ever made."

In her Facebook post, Palin also took aim at the "sick world of politics."

"Out here in the real world full of hardworking Americans who believe that all men are created equal, recognize it's only in the sick world of politics that we are divided into groups of blacks, whites, native, aboriginal ... this, that, and everything else that would hyphenate America," she wrote.
